Botox for TMJ & Headaches

Living with jaw pain, chronic headaches, or facial tension can make even the simplest parts of your day uncomfortable. If clenching, grinding, or overworked jaw muscles are contributing to your symptoms, Botox® may provide lasting relief without surgery. At Advanced Dentistry and Aesthetics, we take a functional approach to TMJ care, combining precise Botox treatments with a thorough evaluation of your bite, jaw function, and airway to address the underlying cause whenever possible.

Botox® for TMJ & Headaches in Park City

Botox works by relaxing the muscles responsible for excessive clenching and jaw tension. When carefully placed into targeted muscles such as the masseter and temporalis, treatment can reduce muscle strain, relieve pressure on the jaw joints, and decrease the frequency of tension headaches. Many patients notice improvements including:

  • Less jaw pain and muscle soreness
  • Fewer tension headaches and facial pain
  • Reduced teeth grinding and clenching
  • Improved comfort while chewing
  • Better quality sleep and less morning jaw fatigue

Treatment is completed in just 20 to 30 minutes with little to no downtime, and patients begin noticing improvement within one to two weeks.

Looking Beyond the Symptoms

While Botox can provide excellent relief, it's only one part of the picture. Dr. Peterson begins every evaluation by identifying why your muscles are working so hard in the first place. Your examination may include an evaluation of:

  • Jaw development and relationship
  • Bite alignment and tooth wear
  • Jaw movement and TMJ function
  • Muscle tenderness and facial pain patterns
  • Airway health and sleep-disordered breathing
  • Clenching and grinding habits

When appropriate, we also collaborate with ENTs, sleep physicians, and myofunctional therapists to provide comprehensive care for complex cases.

Is Botox Right for You?

Botox may be an excellent option if you experience:

  • Chronic jaw pain or muscle tightness
  • Frequent tension headaches or facial pain
  • Teeth grinding or clenching
  • Morning headaches or jaw fatigue
  • Limited improvement with nightguards or other conservative treatments

For many patients, Botox works best when combined with other therapies that improve long-term jaw function.

Your Treatment Options

Every patient's anatomy, symptoms, and underlying causes are different, so we tailor care to your specific needs. After a comprehensive evaluation, your treatment plan may include:

  • Botox® injections to reduce muscle tension
  • Custom bite appliances to protect your teeth and improve jaw position
  • Occlusal adjustments to create a healthier bite
  • Adult Dental Mandibular Advancement therapy when airway concerns contribute to muscle activity
  • SPG blocks with the SphenoCath® device, one of the simplest, most effective, and cost-efficient headache treatments we provide. This needle-free procedure can offer fast headache relief, and most patients know how they're responding after just two visits.
  • NightLase® laser therapy for patients experiencing airway collapse and poor sleep
  • Collaboration with your physician or physical therapist when additional care is appropriate

Our goal is to do more than provide temporary relief. We focus on improving the function of your jaw, addressing the underlying causes of pain, and helping reduce the likelihood that headaches and TMJ symptoms return.

What to Expect

Treatment is comfortable and efficient. During your visit, Dr. Peterson will review your symptoms, perform a comprehensive evaluation, discuss your treatment options, and carefully map the injection sites before administering Botox. Most patients return to normal activities immediately after treatment. Mild tenderness at the injection sites is common, while improvements typically become noticeable within one to two weeks. Results generally last three to five months, and we'll recommend a maintenance schedule based on your individual response. Dr. Peterson may recommend Botox only, or in combination with other modalities. We find that by restoring muscle health and function, most patients see a significant decrease in frequency of future treatment and dosage needed to maintain results following an initial series of treatments.

Long-Term Relief Starts with the Right Diagnosis

Our philosophy is simple: lasting relief starts by understanding what's causing the problem. Rather than treating symptoms alone, we focus on improving the way your teeth, muscles, jaw joints, and airway work together to create healthier function and greater comfort. If you're living with chronic headaches, jaw pain, or facial tension, schedule a consultation with Advanced Dentistry and Aesthetics to discover whether Botox and functional dentistry can help you feel your best.
